
4th National Report on the CNA’s activities on the protocol’s implementation presented to stakeholders
As part of compliance to the Article 33 – Monitoring and Reporting of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Competent National Authorities invited the stakeholders to a Public Consultation on the Fourth National Report on the Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety held on August 23, 2019 at the Biodiversity Management Bureau, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife, Quezon City.

We are pleased to inform you of the country’s Fourth National Report on the Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The report embodies the activities undertaken by the Competent National Authorities (CNA’s) in support of the effective implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety during the last four years (2015-2019). As prescribed by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), a participatory approach was adopted in coming up with the said report. One round of multi-stakeholder consultation was conducted in Quezon City last 23 August 2019.

Call for Final Comments on the Revised Draft Fourth National Report
The draft fourth National Report on the country’s implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was presented, through a public consultation with stakeholders on August 23, 2019, at the Biodiversity Management Bureau, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife, Quezon City. As an offshoot of the said activity, we are providing you the revised version of the report, incorporating the comments/suggestions raised during the consultation process. Beginnings of the development of regulatory guidelines for GM animals
The Department of Agriculture – Biotech Program Office (DA-BPO) organized a 3-days training-workshop on GM Animals for the regulators from various government offices on April 11-13, 2018 at Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. Representatives from Department of Health-Food and Drug Administration (DOH-FDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry and Department of Science and Technology-Biosafety Committee (DOST-BC) Secretariat were present during the training-workshop.

Presentation of Findings/Results and Policy Recommendations of the Study Group on New Breeding Techniques/Innovations
In connection with the ongoing global discussion on the regulation of New Breeding Techniques (NBT, the Department of Agriculture, Biotech Program Office (DABPO) is spearheading a series of presentations of findings of the study group commissioned to review the developments in plant breeding innovations in foreign countries, including trade partners of the Philippines, as well as its research and development prospects in the Philippines.
The presentation of initial findings of the study on NBT was conducted last 27 February and 27 March 2018, respectively at the DA, New Building, Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City.
