No. 2023-016

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am pleased to invite developing country Parties, other Governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, and relevant organizations and initiatives to participate in the Sustainable Ocean Initiative workshop on ocean-related capacity building needs for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to be held virtually from 24 to 28 April 2023.

The workshop is being convened by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) with financial support provided by the Government of the Republic of Korea, through the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The Sustainable Ocean Initiative is a global platform that aims to build partnerships and enhance capacity to achieve global goals and targets on marine and coastal biodiversity. Its implementation is coordinated by the CBD Secretariat in collaboration with various partners. SOI was created on the margins of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention to respond to the need for capacity-building of developing country Parties with regard to the conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity.

The workshop aims to identify and discuss various capacity needs related to the implementation and monitoring of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in marine and coastal areas, including with respect to its goals, targets and indicators. It is expected that the workshop will produce a priority list of capacity needs that will be useful in guiding future capacity-building activities, including those under the Sustainable Ocean Initiative.

Developing country Parties and other Governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, and relevant organizations and initiatives are invited to nominate one expert to participate in this workshop.

Nominations must include: i) an official letter addressed to the Executive Secretary, signed by the national focal point or head of the organization/initiative, indicating the name and full contact details of the nominees; ii) the completed nomination form that can be found here https://www.cbd.int/meetings/SOI-WS-2023-01 ; and iii) the curriculum vitae of the nominees, clearly indicating their areas of expertise and experience.

All nominations must be received as soon as possible but no later than 31 March 2023 ( scanned and attached to an e-mail addressed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). Participants will be selected from among nominees based on relevant expertise and experience, taking into account gender balance and equitable geographical representation, as well as previous experience in scientific, technical and capacity-building work under the Convention and in efforts to implement the Convention.

Workshop materials will be forwarded to the selected participants and posted on the CBD website in due course. The workshop will be held in English.

I thank you for your cooperation in this matter and your continued support for the work of the Convention.
